Brought Together by God

By Genta Misawa (Saturday School Leader)

Through World Youth Day (WYD), I witnessed and experienced first-hand that faith brings people together and connects people.

During WYD, I met people from all over the world. We didn’t know one another’s names or nationalities, but we acted like friends who had known one another for a long period of time…giving high fives, singing hymns on the bus together, trying to converse in broken English…all of this was possible because our Catholic faith had brought us together.

Everyone I met during WYD was warm and full of kindness. Being warm and kind came completely naturally to everyone – people were kind not because they were told by someone to be kind, but simply because they were bursting with the will to be kind.

I felt God’s presence in everyone’s warmth and kindness. I became close friends with the other WYD delegates from Japan. I believe that our friendship became so special and unique because we were brought together by God. WYD has taught me the importance of being compassionate towards others. Someone I met in Poland said, “We may not think anything of speaking ill of others, but that is how conflicts and wars are begun.”

Sometimes, despite knowing that it is not a right thing to do, it is tempting to speak ill of others. However, now I feel that I can overcome this temptation. By sharing in the warmth and the kindness that is within all of us, we can truly connect with one another.

I will strive to be warm and kind to every person that I meet. That way, I believe that the world will be one step closer to becoming a place that is full of smiles and happiness.
