Sharing Our Life with One Another

Homily by Fr. Antonius Firmansyah, SJ
25th Sunday in Ordinary Time[A]
at 12 Noon Mass ~ St. Ignatius Church

Last week we heard the Gospel about giving forgiveness; that it is more important to forgive abundantly rather than seeking our own personal justice. This week, we heard from Jesus’ teaching about Kingdom of God as the place for us to experience the divine justice.

Justice under the Kingdom of God is not about us, trying to prove to God that we are eligible to receive God’s grace. God's grace is not a reward for our hard work as Christians. God gives grace to all of us equally precisely because God can be nothing but a true giver. God exists by sharing with us God’s own existence. Our life is nothing but the sharing of God’s own existence. God gives abundant grace to everybody who is willing to devote their life answering to call to work in God’s vineyard.

Thus, we cannot compare the quantity of God’s given grace to each of us by measuring the result of our work in this world. God’s grace is not a “salary” or reward given to us based on our labor in this world. God’s grace is always offered to us, abundantly waiting for us to embrace it when we willingly let ourselves answering God’s invitation to work in the vineyard. In this sense, God’s grace is not merely about receiving what we deserve as the followers of Jesus. On the contrary, God’s grace is given to us the moment we decide to answer God’s call to work in the God’s own vineyard. We are called not only to receive what we earn. We are called to be like God; which means, to share our life with the people of God, supporting one another who are also answering the same call. When we say ‘yes’ to God’s invitation to work; this is the initial moment of grace in our life.

In the end, justice under the Kingdom of God is not a matter about how God should give grace to all people according to the degree of their worthiness. Justice under the Kingdom of God is about US, letting ourselves be like God, the giver and the sharer of life itself. Justice under the Kingdom of God does not have an economical value. Justice under the Kingdom of God is the result of us sharing our life with one another, supporting those like us who are also trying hard to answer God’s call in their lives. My dear brothers and sisters let us be the instrument of God’s justice to those people who are being robbed of their opportunities to listen and then to answer God’s call in their life.
